Air Source Heat Pump Installation Designed Around Your Property

The outdoor unit is only one part of an air source heat pump installation. Radiators, underfloor heating, pipework, controls and hot water storage all influence performance. A modern Barnstaple house will have different requirements from a rural property near Chulmleigh or an exposed home around Croyde.

Before preparing a quotation, Earth Inspired assesses the property and existing heat source. If radiators or other components need upgrading, we explain this before installation. Hiding necessary work to make a quote look cheaper usually creates a more expensive problem later.

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump is powered by absorbing heat from the environment. It extracts heat from the air even during freezing temperatures and transfers that heat into your home.

How does an air source heat pump work?

A heat pump works a bit like a fridge in reverse. Instead of taking heat out of the inside and releasing it outside, it draws warmth from the outdoor air and transfers it into your home using a small amount of electricity. The system is made up of three key components:

  1. Outdoor heat pump unit: This is the unit you’ll see outside your home. It extracts natural heat from the surrounding air and begins the process of warming your property.
  2. Internal heating system: Warm water circulates through your existing pipework, radiators, and any underfloor heating to keep your rooms cosy. Once the water cools, it returns to the outdoor unit to be reheated, creating a continuous cycle.
  3. Hot water cylinder: This insulated tank stores the heated water, ensuring you always have a steady supply for showers, baths, and taps. It’s typically located in a cupboard or garage, but can be positioned anywhere suitable indoors.

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps

A properly designed air source heat pump can offer:

Running costs depend on electricity tariffs, insulation, heat demand and system use. Claims that every household will make the same saving should be treated cautiously. Earth Inspired will discuss likely performance without promising figures that cannot be guaranteed.

The boiler upgrade scheme

Eligible property owners in England and Wales can currently receive £7,500 towards an air-to-water air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Until March 2027, qualifying properties may receive an additional £1,500 if they are heated by oil or LPG and do not have a mains gas connection. This temporary support is particularly relevant to off-grid homes in rural parts of North Devon.

Earth Inspired is MCS certified, which is required for applications to the scheme. The installer applies on the customer’s behalf and the grant is deducted from the amount paid for the installation. Eligibility and scheme conditions apply.

Is Your Property Suitable?

Air source heat pumps can work in new builds, renovated properties and many existing homes. They are not automatically suitable without checking the building first.

Our assessment considers:

  • the property’s heat demand and insulation

  • the size and output of existing radiators

  • whether underfloor heating is already fitted or planned

  • household hot water use and space for a suitable cylinder

  • a practical position for the outdoor unit

  • the electrical supply, controls and existing pipework

  • any improvements needed before installation

Older properties are not ruled out because of age. Some need insulation work or larger radiators, while others may already be suitable. The survey establishes what is required.

Air Source Heat Pumps with Underfloor Heating

Wet underfloor heating is well suited to air source heat pumps because it can distribute useful room heat using lower water temperatures. The large heated floor area allows warmth to spread evenly without relying on high-temperature radiators.

This combination is practical for new builds, extensions and renovations. Retrofit installation is also possible, but floor height, insulation and the chosen finish need checking.

Earth Inspired installs complete wet underfloor heating systems and can design the heating source and floor system to work together.

Underfloor heating is not essential. Existing radiators may be retained if they provide enough heat at the proposed flow temperature. Where they cannot, selected radiators can often be resized.

Air Source Heat Pump Servicing and Repairs

Earth Inspired does not disappear once the installation is complete. Our engineers provide ongoing servicing and one-off heat pump repairs across North Devon.

Maintenance checks the system, controls and key components, and may be required under the manufacturer’s warranty. If your heat pump develops a fault or stops heating correctly, contact the team instead of repeatedly resetting it.

Where broader pipework, cylinder or radiator work is needed, our domestic plumbing services can be included.

What Happens During Installation?

Property survey

We review the building, current heating, hot water requirements and available outdoor and indoor space.

System design and quotation

The heat pump and connected heating components are specified around the property. Your quotation explains the proposed equipment and any radiator, cylinder, control or pipework changes.

Yes. A correctly selected system can collect heat at sub-zero temperatures. Output and efficiency change as the temperature falls, which must be allowed for during design.

Yes, subject to property suitability. The heating emitters, hot water cylinder, insulation and electrical supply need to be assessed. Eligible off-grid oil-heated properties may currently receive additional grant support.

Possibly. Each radiator must provide enough output at the heat pump’s lower operating temperature. Some installations only need selected radiators enlarged.

Costs vary according to property size, heat demand, chosen equipment and any changes required to radiators, pipework, controls or hot water storage. A survey is needed for an accurate quotation.

Most air-to-water systems that provide domestic hot water use a compatible cylinder. The required size and location depend on the property and household demand.
